Holy Fire and the Great Miracle Attesting the Love of Jesus Years after his Death and Resurrection
Do you know about the Holy Light and the Holy Fire ? It is real. I will be detailing the description about the Holy Light; which recurs every Holy Saturday. Holy Saturday. This is the Saturday of the Easter Holiday. It is also referred to as Easter Eve or the Great Sabbath. I’m talking about the Saturday in between Good Friday as well as Easter Sunday when Christ resurrected. However, the day is usually meant to commemorate the day that Christ lay on the tomb after crucifixion.
As a matter of fact, in the church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem; the miracle of the Holy Light appears every noon of this Holy Saturday. This event has been commemorated by Christians for ages; as many of them flock to this church to witness this amazing miracle.
However, the Holy Fire is appears miraculously. It’s meant to remind us of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. This Godsend miracle; which has happened every Easter Holiday through centuries symbolizes Christ; Christ as the light. It is a genuine miracle; which even science can’t explain… The Holy Fire should bind humanity to the faith in Christ and light their hearts for a better tomorrow.
Description of the Holy Light
Step 1: Preparation of the Holy Sepulcher
The ceremony commences with a thorough check of the tomb after; which it is sealed with a mixture of honey and wax. The check is necessary to assure every pilgrim present that there is nothing in the Sepulcher that can cause fire. After sealing the tomb, the authorities affix the wax with their seals. (See photo below).
Step 2: The Ceremony of the Holy Light
The ceremony takes place at exactly 12:00 in the midday and it constitutes of three stages:
- The Litany
- The entry of the patriarch in the Holy Sepulcher
- Prayers of the patriarch in bid for the Holy Fire to appear
During the ceremony
The Greek Orthodox Patriarch who is normally escorted by arch-priests, priests as well as deacons together with the Armenian Patriarch enters the Holy Sepulcher.
Before their entry the keeper of the Sacristy of the Holy temple brings unlit oil lamp; (the oil lamp is put out that day; so that it can turn together with the Holy Fire). Representatives of the Arabs, the Armenians and the Copts pass and kiss the hand of the Patriarch. This is essential to them; so that they can receive the Holy Fire from his hands. Otherwise according to traditions; they won’t be able to receive it.
The Holy Litany begins and it goes around three times around the Holy Sepulcher before stopping in front of it where the officials too stand. The Holy Sepulcher is then unsealed by the Patriarch who then removes off his official pontifical robes and remains with his white priest’s tunic. The patriarch is then checked by the governor of Jerusalem; as well as the police commander to ensure that he doesn’t possess anything that can light a fire.
However, now that the Holy Litany is over; his Beatitude the patriarch of Jerusalem takes the unlit torches. Then enters the Holy Ciborium together with the Armenian draguman.
Step:3 The Coming of the Holy Fire
While in the Holy Sepulcher; the Patriarch kneels and prays while reading special wishes requesting Jesus Christ to send His Holy Fire as a gift; so that it can sanctify humans. It is during these prayers that a wheezing sound is heard and with it comes the Holy Fire and all the lamps are miraculously lit up. The torches that the patriarch has been holding are too lit.
Nonetheless, during a few minutes after the Holy Fire descends; it doesn’t have the attributes of a real fire. Thus the patriarch comes out of the Holy Sepulcher. It gives the people the Holy Light to touch. It can be touched for about 33 minutes after; which the flame becomes normal. As a matter of fact, it can burn just like a normal fire flame.
Guards of the Holy Sepulchre or The Brotherhood of the Holy Sepulchre
Howbeit, the leader of the Guards of the Holy Sepulcher is the Patriarch of Jerusalem.
The brotherhood constitutes of everyone belonging to the Patriarchate: metropolitan, archbishops, bishops, Archmandrites, priests, monks, caloyers and deacons.
The Guards of the Holy Sepulcher is a monastic community sited in the monastery of the St. Constantine and St. Helena in Jerusalem.
Nevertheless, it’s object and purpose is the custody and maintenance of the Holy Pilgrimages; the guidance of the orthodox Christians in the Holy Land; as well as the advocacy of the Orthodox faith.
However, the Guards of the Holy Sepulcher are always on the forefront. They are the defenders of the borderland of our faith.
The historical beginning is several centuries ago
They are considered the continuation of the order of the “Significant”; whose project was “the service in the Holy pilgrimages. Along with the prayers; and mainly the Holy psalmody in the magnificent church of the Holy Sepulcher”. Old travelogues confirm the existence of the ‘Significant’ before St. Helena’s visit in Jerusalem in 326 AD.
Therefore, the monastic order of the ‘Significant’ was reinforced by the emperors. It extended out of Jerusalem.
Moreover, in 638 AD they were acknowledged from Omar. The reason is because of him as well as from his successors. Through centuries the conquerors of Palestine respected the rights of the Greek monks.
Today, the Guards of the Holy Sepulcher are administrated from a continual 18 member council; with chairman the Jerusalem patriarch.
